Bookkeeping FAQs for UK Small Businesses

You don’t have to have everything sorted before reaching out.
These are some of the most common questions I get asked — and if you’re wondering about something not listed here, you’re always welcome to ask.

1. My bookkeeping is a mess… is that a problem?

Not at all. This is one of the most common reasons people come to me.

If your records are behind, unclear, or feel overwhelming, it can all be sorted. We’ll take it step by step and get everything back into order without pressure or judgement.

2. I’m behind on my bookkeeping and avoiding it… am I too late?

No — and you’re definitely not alone in feeling like this.

Many business owners fall behind at some point. The important thing is starting. Once we look at where things are, we can put a clear plan in place and start reducing that stress straight away.

3. I don’t really understand my numbers — is that going to be a problem?

Not at all. You don’t need to understand everything before we start.

My role is to make things clearer for you, not more complicated. I’ll explain things in a way that makes sense, so you feel more in control of your business finances.

4. Have you worked with businesses like mine before?

I’ve supported a wide range of businesses over the years — from growing companies to more established businesses managing teams and turnover.

While every business is different, the challenges are often very similar. If things feel overwhelming or unclear, you’re exactly the type of business I help.

5. Do you only work with local businesses?

Yes — I focus on supporting businesses locally because I believe in offering a personal service.

Many of my clients have come to me after working with remote bookkeepers where everything felt transactional. I like to build real relationships — meeting for a coffee, talking through your plans, and understanding your business beyond just the numbers.

If you’re based in Worcestershire, I can offer that more hands-on, supportive approach.

6. What size businesses do you usually work with?

I work with limited companies at different stages of growth.

My smallest client has been a start-up with no turnover, and my largest has been a £3.5 million business with around 50 staff.

I don’t work with sole traders — my focus is on limited companies, especially with Making Tax Digital (MTD) requirements becoming increasingly important.

7. Do I still need an accountant if I work with you?

Yes — and I’m happy to work alongside your accountant.

I focus on keeping your bookkeeping accurate and up to date, which makes your accountant’s role smoother and can help reduce costs at year-end..

8. What bookkeeping software do you use?

We primarily use Sage Line 50 within our own systems, allowing us to keep everything structured and consistent.

If your accounts are already on Xero, QuickBooks, or another platform and working well for you, I’m happy to work with that too.

9. How do we get started?

It starts with a conversation.

We’ll talk through where you are now, what’s been building up, and what you need help with. From there, I’ll guide you through the next steps so everything feels manageable.

If you’d like to chat things through (even just over a coffee), you can get in touch here.

10. Will I need to send everything over straight away?

No — we take it step by step.

If things feel overwhelming, we’ll prioritise what’s most important first and work through everything in a structured way.

11. Can you help if I’ve fallen behind with VAT or records?

Yes — this is something I deal with regularly.

If you’re behind on VAT returns or bookkeeping, we can get things brought up to date and back under control.

12. I feel embarrassed about my finances… will I be judged?

Absolutely not.

Many people feel like this before reaching out. My role is to support you and help you feel more in control — not to judge where things are now.
